Democratic Backsliding Drives Millionaire Migration

By Prof. Dr. Yossi Harpaz Wealthy individuals place a high premium on democracy and the rule of law. In countries where these crucial factors are absent or under threat, millionaires are on the lookout for insurance policies and exit options that would help protect their property and personal safety. Such concerns may be driving the recent surge in demand for Plan B residence visas among affluent Americans. Over the past year, advisory firms and attorneys have been flooded with enquiries from wealthy Americans wanting to secure dual citizenship or long-term residence visas abroad as a form of insurance policy against potential disruptions. Interest spiked in the wake of the presidential elections, when it was clear that Donald Trump would return to the White House. But even before the elections, 2024 was a peak year in terms of US demand for golden visas and additional citizenships.1 This boom in interest reflects more…

A Landmark Year for Wealth Migration

The landscape of wealth migration underwent another transformative year in 2024, with 134,000 high-net-worth individuals relocating and establishing new domiciles worldwide. This exceeded initial forecasts driven by robust inflows to the UAE, USA, and Italy, alongside higher-than-expected departures from the UK. Looking ahead to 2025, projections indicate an even greater surge in millionaire migration, with 142,000 high-net-worth individuals with liquid investable wealth of USD 1 million or more expected to seek new horizons. This represents the most significant wealth migration wave ever documented and reflects fundamental changes in how affluent individuals approach geographic and financial planning. Figure 1. Trump’s Re-Election Fuels Dual Citizenship

By: Prof. Peter J. Spiro, Professor of Law at Temple University Law School The USA is suffering political whipsaw. Donald Trump’s return to the White House on 20 January promises a sharp swing away from the last four years of Democratic control. Whatever one thinks of the substance of the President-elect’s policy proposals, he attaches no value to continuity. Many Americans are vigorously opposed to Trump and everything he stands for. They find him disruptive and disreputable, and they are deeply disturbed by his re-election. Not much about the next few years and beyond is clear. But that very fact makes one thing certain: more US citizens will be looking for security in the form of exit options. Even if the USA is unlikely to suffer civil disorder, many Americans fear further political disturbances, against which they are seeking insurance. Americans embrace dual citizenship That insurance comes in the form…
